    We report on lifetime measurements of the 3d(5)(S-6)4s4p(P-3)y P-6 degrees states of Fe II using time-resolved vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser spectroscopy. A laser-produced plasma has been used as the source of free Fe+ ions. The tunable VUV radiation was obtained employing resonantly enhanced sum-difference four-wave-mixing of short laser pulses. We obtained tau((6)P(3/2)degrees) = 3.90(20) ns, tau((6)P(5/2)degrees) = 3.80(20) ns and tau((6)P(7/2)degrees) = 3.65(20) ns

    Lifetimes along perturbed Rydberg series in neutral thallium

    Radiative lifetimes of 15 Tl I levels belonging to the 6s(2)ns(2)S(1/2) (n = 7-14) and 6s(2)nd(2)D(3/2) Rydberg series (n = 6-12) have been measured using a time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence technique. All the measured levels have been excited from the ground state 6s(2)6p(2)P(1/2)(0) (odd parity) with a single-step excitation process. The general perturbation of the ns series by the 6s6p(2) configuration and the corresponding modification of the lifetimes are adequately reproduced by a theoretical model including core-polarization effects and combined with a least-squares fit to the observed energy levels. The general behaviour of the lifetime values for the 6s(2)np odd levels along the Rydberg series is also well reproduced. The use of the multiconfiguration quantum defect theory has allowed us to obtain lifetime values along the 6s(2)ns(2)S(1/2) series up to levels with n = 31

    A Turnover in the Galaxy Main Sequence of Star Formation at M1010MM_{*} \sim 10^{10} M_{\odot} for Redshifts z<1.3z < 1.3

    The relationship between galaxy star formation rates (SFR) and stellar masses (MM_\ast) is re-examined using a mass-selected sample of \sim62,000 star-forming galaxies at z1.3z \le 1.3 in the COSMOS 2-deg2^2 field. Using new far-infrared photometry from HerschelHerschel-PACS and SPIRE and SpitzerSpitzer-MIPS 24 μ\mum, along with derived infrared luminosities from the NRK method based on galaxies' locations in the restframe color-color diagram (NUVr)(NUV - r) vs. (rK)(r - K), we are able to more accurately determine total SFRs for our complete sample. At all redshifts, the relationship between median SFRSFR and MM_\ast follows a power-law at low stellar masses, and flattens to nearly constant SFR at high stellar masses. We describe a new parameterization that provides the best fit to the main sequence and characterizes the low mass power-law slope, turnover mass, and overall scaling. The turnover in the main sequence occurs at a characteristic mass of about M01010MM_{0} \sim 10^{10} M_{\odot} at all redshifts. The low mass power-law slope ranges from 0.9-1.3 and the overall scaling rises in SFR as a function of (1+z)4.12±0.10(1+z)^{4.12 \pm 0.10}. A broken power-law fit below and above the turnover mass gives relationships of SFRM0.88±0.06SFR \propto M_{*}^{0.88 \pm 0.06} below the turnover mass and SFRM0.27±0.04SFR \propto M_{*}^{0.27 \pm 0.04} above the turnover mass. Galaxies more massive than M1010 MM_\ast \gtrsim 10^{10}\ M_{\rm \odot} have on average, a much lower specific star formation rate (sSFR) than would be expected by simply extrapolating the traditional linear fit to the main sequence found for less massive galaxies.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures.     The FERRUM project: new experimental and theoretical f-values for 4p-4d transitions in FeII applied to HST spectra of chi Lupi

    Radiative lifetimes for six highly excited levels in Fe II have been measured at Lund Laser Centre applying the laser induced fluorescence technique and two-step excitation. The energy levels belong to the even-parity 3d(6)(D-5)(4)d subconfiguration at about 10 eV. Branching fractions (BF:s) of 29 transitions from these levels to the 3d(6)(D-5)4p subconfiguration at about 5 eV have been measured in the wavelength region 2000-3000 Angstrom with the Lund Fourier Transform Spectrometer. By normalizing the BF:s with the lifetimes we get experimental oscillator strengths for these 29 4p-4d lines. The oscillator strengths are compared with new theoretical calculations using the orthogonal operator technique and applied to high-resolution spectra of the star chi Lupi, recorded with the Hubble Space Telescope

    Discovery of Massive, Mostly Star-formation Quenched Galaxies with Extremely Large Lyman-alpha Equivalent Widths at z ~ 3

    We report a discovery of 6 massive galaxies with both extremely large Lya equivalent width and evolved stellar population at z ~ 3. These MAssive Extremely STrong Lya emitting Objects (MAESTLOs) have been discovered in our large-volume systematic survey for strong Lya emitters (LAEs) with twelve optical intermediate-band data taken with Subaru/Suprime-Cam in the COSMOS field. Based on the SED fitting analysis for these LAEs, it is found that these MAESTLOs have (1) large rest-frame equivalent width of EW_0(Lya) ~ 100--300 A, (2) M_star ~ 10^10.5--10^11.1 M_sun, and (3) relatively low specific star formation rates of SFR/M_star ~ 0.03--1 Gyr^-1. Three of the 6 MAESTLOs have extended Lyα\alpha emission with a radius of several kpc although they show very compact morphology in the HST/ACS images, which correspond to the rest-frame UV continuum. Since the MAESTLOs do not show any evidence for AGNs, the observed extended Lya emission is likely to be caused by star formation process including the superwind activity. We suggest that this new class of LAEs, MAESTLOs, provides a missing link from star-forming to passively evolving galaxies at the peak era of the cosmic star-formation history.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters on 15th July, 2015. 6 pages including 3 figures and 2 table

    To Explain or Not to Explain?—Artificial Intelligence Explainability in Clinical Decision Support Systems

    Explainability for artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine is a hotly debated topic. Our paper presents a review of the key arguments in favor and against explainability for AI-powered Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) applied to a concrete use case, namely an AI-powered CDSS currently used in the emergency call setting to identify patients with life-threatening cardiac arrest. More specifically, we performed a normative analysis using socio-technical scenarios to provide a nuanced account of the role of explainability for CDSSs for the concrete use case, allowing for abstractions to a more general level. Our analysis focused on three layers: technical considerations, human factors, and the designated system role in decision-making. Our findings suggest that whether explainability can provide added value to CDSS depends on several key questions: technical feasibility, the level of validation in case of explainable algorithms, the characteristics of the context in which the system is implemented, the designated role in the decision-making process, and the key user group(s). Thus, each CDSS will require an individualized assessment of explainability needs and we provide an example of how such an assessment could look like in practice

    A cross-national study on the antecedents of work–life balance from the fit and balance perspective

    Drawing on the perceived work–family fit and balance perspective, this study investigates demands and resources as antecedents of work–life balance (WLB) across four countries (New Zealand, France, Italy and Spain), so as to provide empirical cross-national evidence. Using structural equation modelling analysis on a sample of 870 full time employees, we found that work demands, hours worked and family demands were negatively related to WLB, while job autonomy and supervisor support were positively related to WLB. We also found evidence that resources (job autonomy and supervisor support) moderated the relationships between demands and work–life balance, with high resources consistently buffering any detrimental influence of demands on WLB. Furthermore, our study identified additional predictors of WLB that were unique to some national contexts. For example, in France and Italy, overtime hours worked were negatively associated with WLB, while parental status was positively associated with WLB.
